Murdoch Blinkx: News Corp’s Search For Search
By John Stith
Media Monster Rupert Murdoch said he wanted in on the search business and he might
just be getting there. The LA Times reported Monday that Murdoch's News Corp.
is negotiating for the acquisition of Blinkx, a media based search engine.
Following the
story, News Corp said "We don't have any comment on the speculation."
The big draw for turning Blinkx into Fox Blinkx would be the core of what Blinkx
does, which is media based content drawing from video feeds like TV shows, news
programs and audio content. Blinkx can do things other search engine cannot at
this point with their voice technology. This deal is about the technology Blinkx
has and the edge that would give to Murdoch's other offerings. Murdoch said he's
willing to blow $2 billion on acquiring a search engine.
News Corp's recently failed attempt to pick up Skype left them a handy amount
of cash and many industry analysts feel like this would be a great place to spend
the money. Murdoch has already added some meat to his Internet presence including
the MySpace.com site and the sports-based Scout Media site.
News Corp's presence in media will only grow as the 4th largest media company
in existence. They look to increase their Internet presence to be able to compete
with entities like Yahoo but whether this deal with Blinkx will happen and where
they go from there remains to be seen.
